I think humankind has been many many things throughout many many years. Lovecraft could be mistaken in speaking for the hundreds of thousands of years we have occupied this fine planet. Perhaps this sense of fear as first is a more recent undertaking. Who knows? No one.

In terms of the felt/perceived experience of being a separate, individual consciousness or subjectivity placed withing and confronted by an objective universe that is wholly “other,” the fact that the primal “first emotion” is fear, or insecurity, or whatever name one might want to give it, is actually confirmable in present experience as a self-evident fact.

Nicely written essay on the convolutions and strange paths our ideas take us once we start writing. How we need to jump through the portals we face in the writing process. We learn as we write. Goodbye comfort zone:)
